What exactly happens in Sex Therapy?

I am frequently asked this question. It comes with curiosity, with confusion, occasionally with a bit of judgement. What do you even do?

The truth is, Sex Therapy is talk therapy with a licensed mental health professional who has specialized training in sexual health and functioning. A sex therapist is skilled in assessing sexual concerns, while also attending to the needs of the individual or the couple as a whole. Sex therapy is rarely just a “how to” of sexual behaviors or a prescription to schedule more frequent sexual encounters. It is an intricate exploration of the meaning that sex brings to our lives, and the ways in which attachment, trauma, illness, cultural expectations, and self-identity intersect with sexuality,

In my office, I have the beautiful experience of creating space for my clients to express their fears and curiosities, their grief and their ecstasy, their deepest shame and their wildest fantasies. And in a culture which is at once overtly sexualized and still deeply inhibited about intimacy and pleasure that is a sacred experience.
